The flow of the book is fantastic. To more fully understand the significance of the two view points represented by these two characters, the nature of their relationship becomes increasingly important.

Keen to make the most of their son, a genius scarcely second to Michelangelo, his parents apprentice him to a famour New York artists, Dan Gregory, a figure not unlike Norman Rockwell, who provides the covers of the nation’s most popular magazines with a sentimental and wholly fictitious image of small-town America. Upon help from Berman, Karabekian comes to a realization in his life, that he was merely afraid of people, and opens the painting in the potato barn to the public.

How you decide who that is, is unclear. Kurt Vonnegut, Kilgore Trout and their very best friends. The protagonist just wants to live out his last days on his Long Island home but then is convinced by a seductive widow to write his own autobiography. I like that sort of stuff, but I find it hard to consider it sublime, exactly.

Rabo the illustrator and painter was an expert, if self-trained, draughtsman “you could really draw”a skill he largely abandoned, when he became part of the New York Abstract Expressionist movement.
I won’t give away the other joke, but it’s a kuurt one.
I was lured to this book by Breakfast of Champions, a Vonnegut book that I loved. Moving back and forth from pre-WWII to the present late ‘swe learn of Rabo’s colossal folly and successes as he grapples with a young romance, failed marriage, estranged sons, and the fiasco of the non-inferior latex paint, Sateen Dura Luxe that caused his paintings to disintegrate.

It is this understanding of the essential inability of modernity to reconcile itself with a past it cannot deny, that marks Bluebeard as Vonnegut in clear command of his facility, and fully matured in his understanding of what it means to be American in the second half of the twentieth century.
That was an ordinary way for a patriotic American to talk back then. But here’s where I see their main differences, and I’m looking at their overall bodies of work for this; and, though I’m not worthy, forgive my audacity, Bluebearx going to refer to them on a first name basis.
