In an attempt to be more objective, I’d say this is not Mcewaj finest hour, though a couple of the stories are definitely worth reading. The narrator details the dynamics of his love affair: The collection of stories here transform the ordinary into the fantastical and grotesque but at the same time are careful treatments of marginalised characters. The first piece, Pornography seems to be the most “normal” of the seven.

These stories are diverse, odd, occasionally obtuse and, at all times, engaging. They provide a detailed image of McEwan as one of the best writers in modern Britain. Weird, unique and introspective. There sabanaa visions of a dystopian future where society has broken down, and there is a man who falls in love with a shop mannequin, seeing her as mcewwn perfect partner until her prolongued silences seem to point to her cheating on him behind his back. The opening story, Pornographyfeatures no weird and bizarre elements from other pas – its set in the London borough of Soho, with all its filth, decay and grime chronicled to a T.
Aug 26, Maciek rated it it was ok Shelves: Reflections of a Kept Ape was, sabanaa the title suggests – about a pet ape, however, the interesting detail is that the story is told from the ape’s perspective.

I chain-read McEwan’s first three books while lying in Stafford Hospital, and found them infinitely preferable to the ward. They show a broad range of literary styles and thematic lass, but McEwan’s characteristic prose style very smoothly flowing sentences and ideas and deep interest in sexuality is on beautiful display.

These characters are unafraid to tell their own stories, in perfect, bewildering candor, and ask us to examine our own consciences, ask us to find that demarkation between fetish and perversion. Although it is quite a strange concept, it works really well and isn’t too explicit about it either.
Reflection of a kept Ape: Its about a man working in a porn shop owned by his brother and his juggling love affairs with two women which ultimately ends in terrifying circumstances. Am I alone in feeling that way?

I wonder if I am not as let down as others who wrote such venomous reviews because I have never read McEwan before? On the other hand Dead as They Come is a very graphic novel but it is so strangely fascinating that it makes you want to continue reading Of course there are flaws.
Using the voice of one of the characters the author utters a phrase that could be the motif of the entire collection: I knew it was early McEwan so I was hoping for something more along the lines of The Comfort of Strangers but these are more focused on the concept in each story than the relationship between the characters.

Books by Ian McEwan. To me it feels like incompletely complete 4. McEwan’s works have earned him worldwide critical acclaim. Trivia About In Between the Sh This story perhaps best illustrates how the asbanas has aged – who buys pornographic magazines nowadays, and are there still actual stores which have only this kind of stuff?
Each of the “freaks and monsters” that populate McEwan’s England have a unsettling story to tell. He is reminiscing about his eight day sexual relationship with his owner. Somehow I missed it in the early years and then there must have been a gap when it was not easily available, so when I saw an old second-hand copy I grabbed it with some delight.
View all 4 comments. Although not as compelling as his longer fiction, this is a superb collection of short stories written in McEwan’s compact yet evocative style. The remaining stories are challenging and uncomfortable but in a way that rewards the reader with a deeper understanding of McEwan’s writing and the characters themselves.
