The central theme of the novel is a theological argument and speculation on the nature of identity of the deceased assuming that the soul lives on after death and as a hypothesis the souls of the monks of the Knights Templar, executed in by the King of France, discover that the gates to heaven are closed as the number of the elect has been reached.
